Project: Humanity has become one of the country’s leading developers of Verbatim Theatre, a journalistic form of theatre that involves transforming original interview transcripts into ‘live documentaries’ for audiences. The original work we create explores the art of listening.

In collaboration with activists, academics, social workers and scholars, we have advanced a distinct methodology and ethics for our practices – grounded foremost in developing meaningful and sustained relationships with communities being represented in our work. “Never About Us Without Us” is a guiding principle. Communities represented in our work report positively on the value of seeing their stories on stage; broader audiences convey that our plays make them self-reflective. This is theatre that stimulates the imagination and conscience simultaneously.

Our work overtly contends with questions of social justice and resonates strongly with young people. Creating worlds that inspire and activate youth ensures the future health of our communities and democracy.

“This is theatre that reflects its city in a way that is both urgent and entertaining.”
— The Globe and Mail
“It produces a fictional non-fiction experience in the theatre wherein the actual words of often-underrepresented voices – or historically mispresented voices – take the stage.”
— Andrew Kushnir

To date, PH has:

  • Produced over 200 performances of our verbatim plays, which have premiered in Toronto and toured from Halifax NS to Dawson City YT and every major Canadian centre in between.

  • Created groundbreaking and award-winning theatre that grapples with social issues like youth homelessness, the modern-day legacy of the Underground Railroad, and the radical value of arts education for young people across the globe.

  • Since 2009, hired 95 professional artists including actors, writers, designers, visual artists and youth arts practitioners.

  • Regular funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council. In 2017, the company was 1 of 62 arts organizations in Ontario to receive a prestigious New Chapter grant. There were 709 applicants.
